61. Spiritual Disciplines : Prayer

✓ The most basic definition of prayer is “talking to God.” Prayer is not meditation or passive reflection; it is direct address to God. It is the communication of the human soul with the Lord who created the soul. Prayer is the primary way for the believer in Jesus Christ to communicate his emotions and desires with God and to fellowship with God.
✓ Scripture encourages in prayer. (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
✓Jesus expects us to pray.
  • Matt 6:5 "And when you pray..."
  • Matt 6:6 "But when you pray...."
  • Matt 6:7 "And when you pray..."
  • Matt 6:9 "Pray then like this..."
✓ Prayer is an activity,a relationship,an expression of love and a warfare.
✓ Why don't we pray?
  • Lack of planning
  • Lack of faith
  • Lack of sensing the nearness of God
  • Little awareness of real need
  • Little awareness of the greatness of God
✓ Prayers are answered (Matthew 7:7)
If not, examine our prayer :
  • Are we asking outside the will of God?
  • Are we praying with selfish motives?
  • Are we failing to deal with a blatant sin?
✓Persist in Prayer
  • If you are serious about your request
  • In order to strengthen your faith
  • To develop deeper gratitude
  • Allow God to craft Christ-like patience in us
✓ If the request is wrong, God says, "No." If the timing is wrong, God says, "slow." If you are wrong, God says, "grow." But if the request is right, the timing is right and you are right, God says, "Go" -Bill Hybels
