So what do we conclude from the discussion on the Law of Moses?
1. God is Holy.
2. Every human being is a sinner as he inherits sin nature from Adam. (Original sin)
3. A sinner cannot be in relationship with the Holy God. The Most Holy God cannot have any communion with Sin. (Consequences of sin)
4. Even though a person does 99 good works, a single sin would disrupt his relationship with God, here on earth as well as in eternity where this person (because he is a sinner) will be in hell (based on his own choice).
5. So, no man can have a relationship with God because every man is a sinner.
6. Man, a sinner he is, tries and has tried to get right with God through :
OT sacrifices,
doing good deeds (being a good person, helping the poor etc),
following the Law,
following religion,
doing and following rituals (following sacraments, praying rosaries, going to church daily, celebrating church festivals like feasts of random saints etc)
visiting Pilgrim sites (For eg.Climbing random pilgrim hills with heavy crosses so as to show how much they pity themselves and try to showcase their faith) (God laughs at them btw),
and all the things known to man so as to please God or to get right with God.
7. Do all these works help in the salvation of man or in the process of getting right with God?
Not one bit!!!!
That is the point, by doing all these things you could jump 10m or 20m to get close to God,but the distance between you and God is kms away or perhaps eternity away because God is Holy and every human is a sinner.
So what do we understand now when we think of sin, getting right with God,about the relationship we have with God?
# I MYSELF AM A CONTRIBUTOR TO THE EVIL IN THE WORLD (earlier we used to blame others for being an evil person, but now we know we ourselves are sinners and are evil)
# MY FLESH IS NOT ABLE TO HELP ME
# THE LAW IS NOT ABLE TO HELP ME
# "RELIGION" IS NOT ABLE TO HELP ME
# GOOD WORKS IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH
As a result, we do not have hope. We are destined to hell because of the sin we have in us,not because God sends us. We cannot save ourselves on our own merit. Religion cannot save us. Law cannot save us. Our good deeds cannot save us. We are damned.
This is the Bad News.
So we along with Paul recite :
Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?
(Romans 7:24, ESV)
Rejoice brothers and sisters. The Good News is coming.
