84. The Atonement: The Sufficiency of Christ's death; How can one man die for the sins of mankind?

I believe the sacrifice of Christ was so infinite that, if there had been ten thousand worlds full of sinners to have been redeemed, it was amply sufficient to have redeemed them all. (Spurgeon)
Jesus is God incarnate. We have seen how God entered the physical world in the person of Jesus to die for our sake.
God is of infinite worth. If God enters the human realm,He still has infinite worth.
If Jesus died once and for all for humanity,it has infinite worth.
If you take a weighing balance and put Jesus on one side and every human, the whole universe, the heavens everything you can imagine on the other side, the balance would be fixed on the side of Jesus as He is infinitely worth. He is God in human flesh.
(We'll look into other evidences for Jesus being God when we'll look into the The Doctrine of Christ: Christology.)
Therefore, the death of Jesus is sufficient in the fact that:
1. His death on the cross is applicable for every human being who lived in the past, present and the future.
2. He bore all the sins which we are committing,we committed or will commit in the future.
Let's look at Isaiah 53:4-6
Surely HE took up OUR pain and bore OUR suffering, yet we considered HIM punished by God, stricken by HIM, and afflicted.
But HE was pierced for OUR transgressions, HE was crushed for OUR iniquities; the punishment that brought US peace was on HIM, and by HIS wounds WE are healed.
WE all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of US has turned to OUR own way; and the LORD has laid on HIM the iniquity of US all.
Notice the highlighted words. It is plural to singular. It is OUR,US,WE vs HIM,HIS,HE.
This verse clearly showcases the Sufficiency of Christ's death. It represents us humans on one side of the balance vs Him on the other side.
Now,let's look at two particular statements which Jesus uttered when He was on the cross.
1. Matthew 27:46 tells us that about the ninth hour, Jesus cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
Apart from the Atonement, there is something else very serious happening here. Here we can see that the Eternal Father and the Eternal Son who coexisted from the very beginning being separated for a while. The Son groans in pain, while the Heaven is silent. This is truly a saddening scene.
(More on The Trinity later)
2.  “It is finished!” (John 19:30)
What does this mean? It is as simple as it looks like,IT IS FINISHED. God has completed the redemption of man on the cross by His sacrifice on behalf of all human beings to have ever existed. He took the penalty for sin once and for all. What we have to do is repent and accept this sacrifice in faith.
Question: why do we then run around climbing pilgrim hills, doing thousands of prayers, strictly following ritual laws given by priests and pastors etc?
Why do we think our works would contribute to this finished work of Christ? God is not angry with us when we do not follow church laws or didn't pray our rosary or didn't attend church feasts etc because He knows these things do not contribute to our salvation one bit.
But God is very much concerned about SIN. Sin costs your salvation. The cost of sin was paid by God Himself by His Son's blood. This is a serious issue. Infact, I feel it makes God angry to some extent when we try to contribute to the finished work of Christ by our deeds. This behaviour proves,Jesus was INSUFFICIENT,which is purely unbiblical.
Don't get me wrong, some church related actions do help in building spiritual Disciplines, but not all (eg. Celebrating feasts of saints in the church etc)(we'll cover these issues later). These disciplines however do not contribute towards your salvation.
In conclusion,
  • Jesus is sufficient to take into account the sins of mankind because He is God.
  • Jesus finished the redemption of mankind on the cross.
  • We have the responsibility to repent and accept this sacrifice in faith and to live Holy Lives.
  • We do not have the responsibility to work day in and day out for our salvation,as Christ finished the work.
Some of yall might feel strange after reading the last 4-5 articles as this Biblical truth is not often taught in the churches around the world. Churches focus on works to save a person from the pits of hell and to put people right with God but this is not according to the Scriptures and is not in sync with God's plan of salvation. This has led to weak and theologically unsound Christians.
Romans 10:1-4
1 My friends, how I wish with all my heart that my own people might be saved! How I pray to God for them!
2 I can assure you that they are deeply devoted to God; but their devotion is not based on true knowledge.
3 They have not known the way in which God puts people right with himself, and instead, they have tried to set up their own way; and so they did not submit themselves to God's way of putting people right.
4 For Christ has brought the Law to an end, so that everyone who believes is put right with God.
